This exceptional coffee was created through a collaboration between Sucafina NV and RWACOF, developed specifically for the “A Shot in the Dark” roasting competition. It is grown in the hills of Rutsiro District, located in Rwanda’s Western Province, at elevations ranging from 1,600 to 1,950 meters. The high altitude and fertile soils provide ideal conditions for cultivating high-quality Red Bourbon coffee.
The coffee undergoes an innovative experimental washed process, beginning with 24 hours of anaerobic fermentation in GrainPro bags, where the coffee is sealed in an oxygen-free environment to enhance flavor complexity. It is then pulped and transferred to fermentation tanks for an additional 24 hours, allowing the beans to develop further depth and balance.
The result is a coffee with a balanced yet complex profile, standing out for its clarity and layered flavors. This lot represents the expertise and dedication of 1,213 growers working with RWACOF, supported by Sucafina’s strong commitment to sustainability and quality improvement in Rwanda. Through RWACOF’s Farmer Development Program, in partnership with the London School of Economics (LSE), farmers receive training in Good Agricultural Practices, along with access to loans, farm inputs, and essential farm services.
